General context

Learn how to make an impact with your research! You are cordially invited to join an e-course that will provide you with insights and a step-by-step approach for planning, writing and publishing impactful scientific papers.

 

Objectives

This e-course provides comprehensive instruction on how to plan, write, edit and publish impactful scientific papers. Specifically, this modular e-course covers:

Module 1: Impact:  Definitions of impact, bibliometrics, science-to-society pathways, dimensions of impact, plagiarism and other ethical issues.

Module 2: Plan:  Understanding your audience, how to frame your research, problem definition, actions and outcomes, from data to interpretation, referencing, figures and tables, writing the abstract, choosing journal and authors.

Module 3: Write:  Narrative theory, elements and structure of scientific stories, tense in scientific papers, presenting results, writing the IMRaD sections (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion), crafting the Title.

Module 4: Edit:  Understanding the reader, reader expectations of sentences and paragraphs, pitfalls for non-native English speakers, achieving flow and coherence in all units of discourse, words and style, editing the paper.

Module 5: Publish:  Life cycle of a paper, editorial processes at high-profile journals, peer review, writing a cover letter, types of editorial decisions, communicating with reviewers and editors, what happens after acceptance.

Approach

Content is provided for a variety of learning styles. You will have access to: video lectures with transcripts, online reading material, offline reading material as secured PDF files, quizzes, discussions between the course participants, exercises to practice the concepts, and tasks to apply the concepts to your own research project.

Event intended for

To take this course, you should be a researcher with an ongoing or new project. Ideally, you have generated or will soon generate data, because with this course you will be able to produce a submission-ready manuscript by completing the step-by-step approach of the course tasks. Even if you have yet not generated data, this course will be very relevant and useful because not only will you gain in-depth knowledge about scientific writing and publishing, but you will learn how to read and analyse scientific papers using the concepts taught in the course.

At ESA he drives and contributes to the development and delivery of all its trainings. Before founding Elevate, Dan was an editor with Nature and Nature Physics. He holds a PhD in physics from Lund University (Sweden).

Nellie Linander

Nellie is the Training Product and Client Account Manager at Elevate Scientific Academy. She comes from a teaching background and has a PhD in biology from Lund University. Nellie has a wealth of experience in science communication with diverse audiences, for which she has also received many accolades.
