General context

Generative AI is becoming a key tool in research, supporting tasks like literature review, summarization, drafting, and visualization. During this training, you will explore different AI tools to support tasks from literature reviews to content drafting, summarization, and visualization. We will also show how you can leverage AI agents to execute actions based on predefined context and instructions.

You will learn how to design effective prompts to generate high-quality outputs and critically assess the reliability of AI-generated content. We will also address ethical considerations, including authorship, ownership, and copyright, ensuring you can leverage generative AI tools to improve your productivity while maintaining academic integrity.

Learning outcomes
  • Explain generative AI principles and their relevance to research
  • Identify capabilities and limitations of key tools such as Perplexity, ASTA, Elicit, SciSpace or Consensus, NotebookLM, and Napkin.AI
  • Apply prompt engineering for scholarly tasks
  • Use AI tools for literature reviews, drafting, and visualization
  • Discuss ethics, authorship, and copyright
  • Plan research workflows integrating generative AI
Approach

This training blends conceptual introductions with hands-on demonstrations. You will experiment with generative AI platforms and AI agents in guided exercises and practice designing effective prompts in real academic scenarios.

Event intended for

This workshop is designed for researchers and staff support who want to explore how generative AI can enhance their academic work. The course takes an interdisciplinary approach, ensuring relevance across various research domains and professional roles.

Required skills

No prior experience with AI tools is required.

Extra information

This course is part of the Basic research essentials learning path.

AI methods used

This training focuses on generative AI models, particularly large language models and researcher-oriented tools (e.g. chat-based assistants, literature discovery, and summarisation platforms) used to support scholarly workflows. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how these tools generate outputs, how to use them effectively, and their key limitations in research contexts.
