General context

Generalized linear Mixed Models is what you need when the output of your experiment is not normally distributed. This happens often: proportions, count data, categorical outcome, but also many continuous observations in life sciences are skewed or constrained in one way or the other.

This course is a follow up on the Linear Mixed Model course where al the ins and the out of clustered and dependent observations is explained. We build further on this and add the complexity of the non-normality.

Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to teach you to recognize the distributional complexity and enable you to do and interpret practical analysis in R. We will start with the package lme4, but he nature of the data often will prohibit to find solutions via the usual algorithms. Therefor also more advanced Bayesian approaches will be covered in the course.

Required skills

It's mandatory to first follow the Linear Mixed Models course.

Joris De Wolf has a long track record in biostatistics. He worked at Crop-Design, later BASF, as team leader of the biostatistics group. He was involved in the experimental design and start-up of the high-throughput phenotyping system TraitMill, design of the databases and streamlining of statistical analyses. Furthermore, he was responsible for the field testing pipeline and statistics on transgenic yield improvement. In 2016, he joined GSK vaccines. Currently he works full time as a biostatistics consultant.
