General context
Important notice
The selection procedure has now been closed, and only the selected participants will be invited to register.
This interactive workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the context of core facilities. It highlights how KPIs can be used to drive operational performance, financial sustainability, scientific impact, user satisfaction, future-proofing, and innovation.
It focuses on aligning Core Facility KPIs with the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the institute. The workshop covers practical approaches for defining, tracking, and analyzing KPIs to improve operational efficiency and support impactful reporting.
Through real-world examples and case studies, the course introduces best practices in KPI data management, including reproducibility, benchmarking, and portability. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with actionable tools to support data-driven decision-making, drive continuous improvement, and run a more impactful and strategically aligned core facility that contributes to the broader institutional mission.
Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Define KPIs and their role in measuring core facility performance.
- Identify key performance areas for core facilities and select relevant KPIs to track.
- Apply best practices for managing KPI data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reproducibility.
- Utilize KPIs to align core facility operations with institutional goals, supporting long-term objectives and driving growth.
- Implement continuous improvement strategies based on KPI trends and insights.
To get the most out of this workshop, participants are expected to have:
- A solid understanding of core facility operations
- Basic proficiency in using Excel or Google Sheets for tracking data
Familiarity with (recommended but not required):
- Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
- Data analytics or visualization tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, Tableau)
- Project management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello)
Farzaneh Ghazavi - Coordinator
Farzaneh Ghazavi is a Project Manager at VIB Technologies, where she leads cross-institutional projects focused on core facility performance, operational improvement, and strategic alignment. She holds a PhD in Medical Sciences and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biotechnology. Before joining VIB, she served as Head of Bioprocess Development in a biotech company, where she led multidisciplinary teams and drove innovation in production processes. Farzaneh brings a strong combination of scientific insight, operational leadership, and a systems-thinking approach to support the evolving role of core facilities in research institutes.
Trainers
Alexander Botzki
Alexander Botzki at the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology, Belgium has with his group the mission of providing technology training in domains of VIB Technologies, Bioinformatics & AI, Software Development, and Research Data Management. Between 2014 and 2022, he was head of the VIB Bioinformatics Core. From September 2009 to July 2014, he was responsible for the roll-out of E-Notebook (electronic lab notebook) to VIB's researchers within 75 research groups.
Before joining VIB, Alexander worked on various computational biology projects for Algonomics (bought by Lonza, 2008-2009) and DevGen (now Syngenta, from 2006-2008). During Alexander's PostDoc at Sanofi Aventis in Strasbourg, he executed various virtual screening campaigns on the compound selection of the merged enterprise. He received his doctoral degree with the group of Prof. Dr. Armin Buschauer (University of Regensburg, Germany) on 'Structure-based design of hyaluronidase inhibitors'.
Wouter De Broeck
Wouter De Broeck is Senior Sustainability Manager at VIB where he coordinates the institute’s transition toward more sustainable operations, including carbon accounting, sustainability reporting, sustainable procurement, greener laboratory practices and sustainable lab practices certification (LEAF). With a background in journalism on renewable energy and environmental issues, he combines communication, systems thinking, and environmental management to embed sustainability into daily research practice.
Stefaan Derveaux
Stefaan Derveaux is a Belgian bioscience engineer and sequencing specialist who heads the VIB Nucleomics Core, the central genomics facility of the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) in Belgium. He obtained a master’s degree in Bioscience Engineering in Cell- and Gene Biotechnology in 2003 and completed a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2008 at Ghent University, working closely with Memobead Technologies and Tibotec-Virco, which sparked his interest in technology development and transfer. After his PhD, he helped integrate high-throughput quantitative PCR technologies at the Center for Medical Genetics at Ghent University Hospital and contributed to the early activities of Biogazelle, a Belgian qPCR-focused company. He then moved into industry, first as an independent sales representative and later as managing director of the European subsidiary of WaferGen BioSystems (acquired by Takara), gaining broad experience with qPCR, next-generation sequencing, and single-cell analysis platforms. Since 2015, Stefaan has led the VIB Nucleomics Core, guiding its evolution from microarrays to a state-of-the-art sequencing center and restructuring operations, data handling, and bioinformatics pipelines, while introducing long-read sequencing and modular automation, and expanding high-throughput short-read sequencing to support large-scale and single-cell and spatial sequencing projects across diverse life science domains.
Saskia Lippens
Saskia Lippens is the Deputy Director of VIB Technologies. She has experience in life science research and core facility management, with a strong focus on promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and nurturing talent to advance the future of the life sciences sector.
Audrey Salles
Audrey Salles is a senior expert research engineer specializing in advanced photonic imaging at the Unit of Technology and Service of Photonic BioImaging (UTechS PBI) of the Institut Pasteur in Paris where her primary role is to support scientific research by providing advanced expertise in biology and imaging. She offers high-level technical guidance to users, covering both standard and different cutting-edge photonic imaging techniques, while ensuring optimal experimental design and data interpretation.
Beyond her technical contributions, as the quality correspondent for nine years, she has been instrumental in maintaining ISO 9001 certification, overseeing process optimization, and ensuring compliance with quality standards.
Gert Van Isterdael
As head of the VIB Flow Core, Gert provides flow cytometry expertise to the users of the core facility by giving technical help to the scientists, maintaining the machines, implicating high quality SOPs as well as providing both experimental setup and data analysis consultations. The Flow Core develops novel automated analysis techniques for multi-parameter flow cytometry data to remove user bias in close collaboration with the on-site Bioinformatics team headed by Prof. Yvan Saeys.
Geert Van Minnebruggen
Geert Van Minnebruggen is a senior life sciences professional with over 20 years of experience in the sector. After his PhD and postdoc at Ghent University, he moved to Barrier Therapeutics (a former spin-out of Janssen Pharmaceutica), where he became Director anti-infectives. In 2008, his passion for fundamental science brought him back to VIB, where he first held the position of Integration Manager. In this policy-driven role, he kick-started several institutional initiatives and combined a strong business acumen, a creative and entrepreneurial spirit, with a natural talent for multi-stakeholder interactions. In 2014, he became Head of the VIB Core Facility Program and in 2017 also Head of the VIB Science & Technology Unit. In 2022, the VIB Core Facility Program was renamed VIB Technologies, and Geert assumed the role of Technology Director, continuing to drive technological innovation and strategic development within the institute.
