General context

Many research projects and data-driven tasks require working with Linux environments to manage files, run software, and automate processes. Learning to use the Linux command line is essential for working efficiently and independently in these settings.

This introductory training covers the fundamentals needed to navigate the Linux file system, manage files and directories, and execute simple scripts.

Learning outcomes
  • Identify the structure and key components of the Linux file system (e.g., root directory, home directories, and system folders)
  • Navigate directories and files using basic command-line commands
  • Manipulate files and folders by performing essential operations such as copying, moving, and deleting
  • Create simple Bash scripts to automate routine tasks
Approach

The training combines short explanations with hands-on exercises on using command line and writing bash scripts on the VSC.

Event intended for

This training is intended for anyone interested in data-intensive research or automation tasks who has no prior experience with the Linux command line. It may be a required prerequisite for certain training sessions related to data analysis.
