Research Data Management: your ally on the way to your publication
01 / 08 / 22 October
General context
It is better to start with the publication in mind!
In this course you will learn how to use Research Data Management (RDM) in order to improve the writing of your publications and potentially increase its impact.
Starting from basic concepts together with hands-on activities and discussions, during two days you will learn how to standardize, document and submit your data in a repository and how all of this will help you to underpin your publication!
- Define, explain, and differentiate RDM, FAIR data and Open data.
- Find information and resources about RDM.
- Organize, structure, and standardize data and documentation linked to experiments and publication during and after research.
- Apply minimal metadata standards for domain-specific data.
- Describe the impact of documentation on the publication preparation.
- Finding trusted and certified repositories (generic and discipline specific), and learning how to deposit data to them.
- Recognize, explain, and discuss the GDPR.
- Understanding how to protect and anonymize personal data.
- Reuse and verify data.
- Understanding the data management plan, what it is for, and what should be coverage.
Researchers who want to improve the writing and impact of their publications by better managing their experimental data.
Trainers
Alexander Botzki
Alexander Botzki at the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology, Belgium has with his group the mission of providing technology training in domains of VIB Technologies, Bioinformatics & AI, Software Development, and Research Data Management. Between 2014 and 2022, he was head of the VIB Bioinformatics Core. From September 2009 to July 2014, he was responsible for the roll-out of E-Notebook (electronic lab notebook) to VIB's researchers within 75 research groups.
Before joining VIB, Alexander worked on various computational biology projects for Algonomics (bought by Lonza, 2008-2009) and DevGen (now Syngenta, from 2006-2008). During Alexander's PostDoc at Sanofi Aventis in Strasbourg, he executed various virtual screening campaigns on the compound selection of the merged enterprise. He received his doctoral degree with the group of Prof. Dr. Armin Buschauer (University of Regensburg, Germany) on 'Structure-based design of hyaluronidase inhibitors'.
Bruna Piereck
Bruna Piereck is a bioinformatics trainer at VIB and ELIXIR-BE training coordinator deputy. She obtained a Master and PhD degree in Molecular Genetics, with a focus on Bioinformatics from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2019. During her PhD, she had the chance to collaborate with the university of Luxembourg and the McGill university in Quebec Canada for a short time. Ever since she has been involved with teaching and research and Since March 2022, she joined VIB with the mission of teaching and assist other trainers in a variety of topics.
Flora D'Anna
Flora D’Anna, data steward at VIB and ELIXIR Belgium, develops software and tools to enable research data management practices in Life Sciences.
Niels Geudens
Niels is a research data steward at VIB, where he oversees research data across various life science projects, handling all its aspects throughout the data's life cycle. Niels earned his PhD in Chemistry from Ghent University, specializing in the structural elucidation and mode of action of secondary metabolites. After his PhD, he was actively involved in teaching, delivering several university courses at the Bachelor and Master levels, and guiding thesis and PhD students as they navigate their first steps in academic research. Since April 2024, he is part of the Data Core at VIB.
René Custers
René Custers is strongly involved with Biosafety, bio-ethical issues, and research integrity topics. Interested in contributing to the education of responsible scientists and to contribute to a science based, responsible development and sustainable use of products and services resulting from life sciences and modern biotechnology.
Dilza Campos
Dilza Campos is a project manager at VIB and Human Data Coordinator at Elixir-Belgium, where she manages VIB's participation in large genomic projects such as the Genomic Data Infrastructure and the Genome of Europe. She is a biologist with experience in human whole-genome sequencing analysis and in managing human data throughout the data lifecycle.
