General context
It is better to start with the publication in mind!
In this course, you will learn how to use Research Data Management (RDM) to improve the writing of your publications and potentially increase its impact.
Starting from basic concepts, together with hands-on activities and discussions, during three half days, you will learn how to standardize, document, and submit your data in a repository and how all of this will help you underpin your publication!
- Define, explain, and differentiate RDM, FAIR data, and Open data.
- Find information and resources about RDM.
- Organize, structure, and standardize data and documentation linked to experiments and publication during and after research.
- Apply minimal metadata standards or domain-specific data.
- Describe the impact of documentation on the publication preparation.
- Finding trusted and certified repositories (generic and discipline-specific) and learning how to deposit data in them.
- Recognize, explain, and discuss the GDPR.
- Understanding how to protect and anonymize personal data.
- Reuse and verify data.
- Understanding the data management plan, what it is for, and what should be covered.
Researchers who want to improve the writing and impact of their publications by better managing their experimental data.
Trainers
Bruna Piereck
Bruna Piereck is a bioinformatics trainer at VIB and ELIXIR-BE training coordinator deputy. She obtained a Master and PhD degree in Molecular Genetics, with a focus on Bioinformatics from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2019. During her PhD, she had the chance to collaborate with the university of Luxembourg and the McGill university in Quebec Canada for a short time. Ever since she has been involved with teaching and research and Since March 2022, she joined VIB with the mission of teaching and assist other trainers in a variety of topics.
Niels Geudens
Niels is a research data steward at VIB, where he oversees research data across various life science projects, handling all its aspects throughout the data's life cycle. Niels earned his PhD in Chemistry from Ghent University, specializing in the structural elucidation and mode of action of secondary metabolites. After his PhD, he was actively involved in teaching, delivering several university courses at the Bachelor and Master levels, and guiding thesis and PhD students as they navigate their first steps in academic research. Since April 2024, he is part of the Data Core at VIB.
René Custers
René Custers is strongly involved with Biosafety, bio-ethical issues, and research integrity topics. Interested in contributing to the education of responsible scientists and to contribute to a science based, responsible development and sustainable use of products and services resulting from life sciences and modern biotechnology.
Dilza Campos
Dilza Campos is a project manager at VIB and Human Data Coordinator at Elixir-Belgium, where she manages VIB's participation in large genomic projects such as the Genomic Data Infrastructure and the Genome of Europe. She is a biologist with experience in human whole-genome sequencing analysis and in managing human data throughout the data lifecycle.
Willeke de Haan
Willeke de Haan has a PhD in biomedical sciences and is now working the KU Leuven research coordination office where she gives training and advise about research data management.
Matheus Lourenço
Matheus Lourenço is a science communication expert and trainer at VIB. A behaviour change specialist and Marie-Curie fellow with a joint PhD in Psychology from KU Leuven and Maastricht University, he pioneered innovative methodologies in tinnitus treatment and gathered accolades for his ability to make complex scientific approaches accessible to diverse audiences.
After completing his PhD, Matheus worked as a consultant to leading pharmaceutical companies, delivering strategic workshops worldwide. Now back in academia, he is committed to empowering researchers to communicate their work with clarity and impact, thereby strengthening the connection between science and society.
