Duration:

General context

Self-leadership is the process by which a person becomes more comfortable with who they are and what they want, allowing them to fulfill their potential and build a strong foundation from which to take daily decisions – both professional and personal. Self-leadership enables more effective communication, enhanced fulfillment and more balanced decisions. In the world of scientific research, both men and women can benefit from learning and practicing self-leadership to improve their professional and personal lives. This course aims to give the participants support, advice and tools to use in their leadership roles.

In this workshop, we will explore the topic of self-leadership by addressing self-awareness, self-confidence and self-efficacy. At the same time, the workshop provides a space where the participants can exchange ideas and strategies on how to cope with situations they may be facing due to being part of a minority group.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define self-leadership and recognize its role in effective professional behavior and decision-making.
  • Increase self-awareness by identifying personal values, strengths, and achievements.
  • Reflect on how personality traits, internalized biases, and external stereotypes influence leadership behavior.
  • Identify personal strategies for dealing with professional challenges and building resilience.
  • Develop a personal vision of how they wish to be perceived in different life and work roles.
  • Apply self-leadership tools to improve communication, confidence, and clarity in daily interactions.
Approach

This highly interactive and reflective workshop combines practical tools with guided personal exploration. Using small-group discussions, role-plays, and real-life case studies, participants are encouraged to connect deeply with their own experiences and leadership style. The group is kept small (max. 14) to ensure safety, active engagement, and meaningful peer learning.

Participants will leave with concrete tools to support ongoing self-leadership development in both professional and personal contexts.

Event intended for

Postdocs, last year PhD students and junior group leaders from VIB

The course was very well set-up, even though it was held through a Zoom session. The trainees did a lot of effort to keep a good balance and to do excercises and workshops during the "class". Usually I prefer to have a course in a classroom, but thanks to this system, it was very nice. The course was very nice and truely inspiring! By talking to the trainees and the other members, you start thinking about who you are and what you want in your life. it's a course that will stay with me for a while!

Participant edition 2023

The course was much better than expected. There were a lot of discussions, interactive activities and also introspection.

Participant edition 2022

This is the best training I have ever followed. It was not just theory. In these three days, I learned to talk to myself and to look at others in a different light. It also provided valuable tools that can be applied to everyday life.
