General context

This course combines e-learning with an online session.

This course will give an introduction into the tidyverse, a number of R packages that were designed to simplify data analysis in R. Since we have already handled the ggplot2 package in the R introduction course, we will focus in this course on packages like magrittr, tibble, dplyr and tidyr.

The course will consist of:

  • e-learning, where you will watch parts of the theory upfront
  • exercise session on YouTube where you can ask questions and where you apply the theory to real-life example data

Since part of the course is done via e-learning you have to take into account that you will have to spend time on this course outside of class.

Learning outcomes

Introduction into the following tidyverse components:

  • the dplyr package to easily manipulate tables
  • the tidyr package to easily change the format of a table
  • the pipe operator to easily combine functions
  • tibbles as they are generated by many functions in the tidyverse
Required skills

Basic knowledge of R is required. If you have no experience with R please send a mail to Janick.Mathys@vib.be and I will squeeze you in in our R introduction course.

Janick Mathys
VIB Training and Conferences, BE

Janick tries to help VIB scientists analyze their data by offering bioinformatics training and support. Next to organizing trainings, creating e-learning courses and teaching statistics, R, Python, Linux, HPC, bulk and single cell RNA-Seq analysis, she consults scientists and develops pipelines for omics analyses. Before joining VIB, she worked as a post-doc at KULeuven, doing research on transcriptomics and transcription regulation. She coordinated the Master of Bioinformatics program of KULeuven and taught the course on Biological Databases.
