General context

This course is designed for early-career educators and researchers who wish to develop the confidence and skills to design, develop and deliver effective training. It targets early stage trainers, postdoctoral researchers, and academic staff involved in teaching.

During the training, you will learn evidence-based principles of how people learn and how to apply these principles to create structured, captivating, and practical sessions. The course emphasizes fostering learner engagement, organizing content for clarity, and providing constructive feedback.

Based on the ELIXIR-GOBLET Train-the-Trainer framework, the program also addresses common challenges faced in academic teaching environments and encourages peer-to-peer exchange. Although examples are drawn from bioinformatics, the concepts and strategies introduced are transferable to teaching across higher education disciplines.

Learning outcomes
  • List and describe key principles of how people learn and their relevance for effective training
  • Discuss the impact of applying learning principles on the trainer's approach
  • Formulate clear and measurable learning outcomes for a training session
  • Draft a training syllabus and a structured lesson plan
  • Describe at least three training techniques grounded in learning principles
  • Identify and organize types of materials required for different parts of a session
  • Differentiate types and functions of feedback and assessment strategies
Approach

The course is highly interactive, and it is essential that you actively contribute to all sessions and course elements. You will need to bring a laptop. After the session, you can schedule a one-on-one meeting with a trainer to support you in FAIRifying your own material.

Alexander Botzki at the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology, Belgium has with his group the mission of providing technology training in domains of VIB Technologies, Bioinformatics & AI, Software Development, and Research Data Management. Between 2014 and 2022, he was head of the VIB Bioinformatics Core. From September 2009 to July 2014, he was responsible for the roll-out of E-Notebook (electronic lab notebook) to VIB's researchers within 75 research groups.

Before joining VIB, Alexander worked on various computational biology projects for Algonomics (bought by Lonza, 2008-2009) and DevGen (now Syngenta, from 2006-2008). During Alexander's PostDoc at Sanofi Aventis in Strasbourg, he executed various virtual screening campaigns on the compound selection of the merged enterprise. He received his doctoral degree with the group of Prof. Dr. Armin Buschauer (University of Regensburg, Germany) on 'Structure-based design of hyaluronidase inhibitors'.
