Training material made FAIR by design
Training material made FAIR by design
to be announced
General context
In this course, you will learn from A to Z about how to design a FAIR training material. You will be challenged to work in a group to build a FAIR lesson on a topic to be presented at the end of the course. Come inspired!
It is based on the FAIR training handbook from ELIXIR and the 10 simple rules for making material FAIR for publication. All sessions are structured to complement each other, aiming to introduce participants to a theoretical & hands-on approach to designing FAIR training material.
Activities are designed to enhance technical skills and critical thinking, while also developing a new training course.
- Create a FAIR and open training material from the start
- Apply FAIR principles to all elements of training material
- Use AI tools in the content creation of FAIR training material
To see the specific learning outcomes of each session, please check the course website.
The course is highly interactive, and it is essential that you actively contribute to all sessions and course elements. You will need to bring a laptop. After the session, you can schedule a one-on-one meeting with a trainer to support you in FAIRifying your own material.
Instructors, researchers, and anyone interested in designing FAIR training materials.
To be able to follow the course and complete the exercises:
- Familiarity with Git & GitHub.
- If you don't have it, we advise checking at least one of the following:
- Our training on the 5th and 6th Nocember: Versioning code and documentation with Git & GitHub
- The GitHub Skills pages and/or Github courses in Glittr.org
- If you don't have it, we advise checking at least one of the following:
Pre-reading the FAIR Training Handbook
Pre-reading 10 simple rules to make material FAIR publication
This course is part of the learning path Teaching & instruction.
AI methods used
This course includes limited use of AI-assisted tools, specifically applications such as NotebookML, to support content generation and the organization of training materials. These tools rely on language-based AI to assist with structuring, summarising, and refining content.
Trainers
Bruna Piereck
Bruna Piereck is a bioinformatics trainer at VIB and ELIXIR-BE training coordinator deputy. She obtained a Master and PhD degree in Molecular Genetics, with a focus on Bioinformatics from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2019. During her PhD, she had the chance to collaborate with the university of Luxembourg and the McGill university in Quebec Canada for a short time. Ever since she has been involved with teaching and research and Since March 2022, she joined VIB with the mission of teaching and assist other trainers in a variety of topics.
Alexander Botzki
Alexander Botzki at the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology, Belgium has with his group the mission of providing technology training in domains of VIB Technologies, Bioinformatics & AI, Software Development, and Research Data Management. Between 2014 and 2022, he was head of the VIB Bioinformatics Core. From September 2009 to July 2014, he was responsible for the roll-out of E-Notebook (electronic lab notebook) to VIB's researchers within 75 research groups.
Before joining VIB, Alexander worked on various computational biology projects for Algonomics (bought by Lonza, 2008-2009) and DevGen (now Syngenta, from 2006-2008). During Alexander's PostDoc at Sanofi Aventis in Strasbourg, he executed various virtual screening campaigns on the compound selection of the merged enterprise. He received his doctoral degree with the group of Prof. Dr. Armin Buschauer (University of Regensburg, Germany) on 'Structure-based design of hyaluronidase inhibitors'.
