General context
Publishing in peer-reviewed journals is essential for advancing a scientific career, yet writing a strong paper can be challenging. This course provides tools, structures, and support to help you write and publish effectively.
Through expert guidance and peer collaboration, you will learn how to plan, draft, and refine a scientific manuscript, select the right journal, and respond constructively to reviewers. You will also explore how to use AI tools responsibly in scientific writing.
After this training, you will:
- Plan and structure a scientific manuscript using the IMRaD format.
- Write clear, concise sections, including a compelling abstract.
- Choose an appropriate journal and understand submission requirements.
- Respond effectively to reviewer feedback and handle revisions professionally.
- Apply strategies to maximize the visibility and impact of your work.
- Use AI writing tools responsibly in scientific publishing.
This online program combines live, interactive sessions with self-paced materials:
- 5 live sessions (1.5 hours each) for group exercises, Q&A, and peer discussion.
- Pre-recorded videos and handouts available on the learning platform for flexible study.
- Opportunities to draft and refine your own abstract with expert and peer feedback.
Expect to dedicate about 16–20 hours in total. Zoom access details will be shared one week before the first session.
PhD students and postdocs at VIB who are interested in developing strong scientific writing skills and gaining insights into how to improve their chance of publishing in high quality journals.

Trainers
Stefania Vaga
This course was developed by Cofactor founder Anna Sharman, an experienced researcher trainer who has been a postdoc, an in-house biology journal editor and a publishing consultant. The live sessions will be run by Cofactor’s experienced associate trainer Stefania Vaga. A former scientist with a passion for clear communication and compelling storytelling, Stefania brings a unique blend of academic insight and creative energy to her teaching. At Cofactor, she helps researchers craft and share their discoveries with clarity and impact - something she finds deeply rewarding.
Outside of training and editing, Stefania is also a fiction writer, adventurous cook, avid traveler, and painter. Her favorite words? 'Imagination' and 'serendipity' - both of which reflect her vibrant approach to life and learning.
