Active Bystander Approach - Workshop
15 October 13h-16h
General context
VIB is committed to fostering a diverse, safe and inclusive workplace for all the collaborators. This process includes adopting new policies (like the Bullying and Harassment policy), implementing different initiatives and also training. A lot of what we experience as workplace culture or climate is mitigated by behaviour and interpersonal interactions.
Research has shown that an active bystander approach can really support workplace inclusion. When the majority of the collaborators are skilled in active bystander intervention (the 5 Ds approach) and are empowered to call out problematic behaviour, unwanted behaviour becomes socially unacceptable and decreases. And when workplace safety and inclusion is improved, workplace outcomes also improve. Therefore, active bystanders are a very important stakeholder in achieving inclusive excellence across VIB.
The proposed Active Bystander training aims at achieving the following learning objectives:
- A recap of some of the key concepts around unwanted behaviour, such as harassment, bullying, micro-aggressions, clarifying the differences and definitions, through lots of examples
- By simulating life-like experiences via role-plays and scenarios, participants get the opportunity to observe and discuss situations and behaviours that may or may not be transgressive
- Gaining a detailed explanation of the 5 Ds of Active Bystander behaviours and strategies and get many opportunities to practice on life-like scenarios
- Learning about the barriers and enablers of Active Bystander behaviour
- Group discussion to normalise conversation around these issues and exchange experiences and tackle questions
- Recap of the VIB reporting mechanisms and channels
The workshop takes 3 hours. It has a very interactive and engaging format, offering plenty of opportunities to ask questions, clarify behaviours and also tackle the „grey zones”. It includes both theory, practice, role-play exercises and a quiz.
Next to the open offer for which you can register on this page, the workshop can also be - delivered in-person to a VIB team, group or lab, collaborators that work together. Please contact training@vib.be for more information.
All VIB collaborators, ideally in groups of 15-25 participants. Ideally the Active Bystander approach workshop is combined with the Dignity at Work training, on the same day, or on subsequent days for the same participants.
- Because of the nature of the topic, we ensure that there is a safe and inclusive environment during the workshop, with a number of safety rules put in place, using anonymous generic examples, allowing participants to leave the room at any time, as well as engage as much or as little in the workshop as they want.
- This training is only open for VIB participants and is free.
- Note that upon no show without valid justification you will be blacklisted for the VIB training program for 1 year. Click here for more information.
- This course is also organized in Leuven, Antwerp and Ghent.
