General context

After an introduction on explicit culture, the workshop focuses on the importance of meaning behind cultural behavior and norms using a model of different cultural dilemmas. These are the universal social dilemmas that cultures around the world have solved in different ways and consequently result in many different cultural values. This workshop is an introduction to cultural differences in a business environment.

 

Objectives

After following this course, you will:

  • Increase your awareness and understanding of your own cultural orientation.
  • Accept that colleagues may have a different set of working values that results from a different learning process.
  • Learn to avoid making judgmental statements when commenting on these values.


 

Approach

Experience based presentations and learning from sharing experiences.
Discussing cases enabling effective learning.
Presenting practical tips on the influence cultural differences have on building trust, decision making, showing respect and communication (expressing opinions and criticism).

 

Event intended for

This workshop is for those who work for professional reasons with people from different cultural backgrounds or who work abroad.

Trainers

Luc De Haes - Leuvion

Luc grew up in Congo. He holds a Master Degree in Organizational Psychology (K.U. Leuven – with honors) and accomplished his initial ambition to study cultural differences when attending a Master in Anthropology in 1996 (K.U. Leuven) in an open enrollment status.

He started his career in 1979 as a logistics and sales manager based in Rwanda & Kenya (2 years), Egypt (5 years), France and The Netherlands. He acquired his trainer & consulting skills as a management consultant & sales trainer for Mercuri International. Luc developed his marketing acumen when acting as the marketing & sales director (management videos with professors from INSEAD) at Video Management.

He created what is today LEUVION in 1994 and focuses on the business development of companies across borders with a personal emphasis on the cultural challenges.

He worked with PLATINUM technology – Chicago, and later, when acquired by Computer Associates, for CA – New York, as the training manager for EMEA from late 1998 till early 2001.

Luc is/was a guest professor at the University of Ghent, the Vlerick Business School, the Antwerp Management School (AMS) and a guest speaker to international organizations such as the European Commission.

In 2006, his book “Groeien in het buitenland” (Growing across borders), published in Dutch, summarizes his life experiences of growing business across borders with interesting cases of medium sized companies.

The last 5 years he also developed a new business designing game coins which are manufactured in China.
