Improving science through sustainable practices
24 October, 9h30 - 11h
General context
“How Greener Practice Can Enhance Research”
Applying sustainable practices in a lab environment is often seen as conflicting with the excellence in science we all strive for. Patrick Penndorf, researcher in molecular medicine (Neuroimmunology & Epigenetics), proves that efficient sustainable practices can actually improve both scientific work and well-being of researchers.
- Share how sustainable practice can enhance scientific conduct based on personal experience from the laboratory. Both enhancement of data as well as improvement of workflows will be addressed.
- Provide participants with applicable knowledge by giving concrete examples of the underlying concept as well as approaches to drive change.
- The optimization of the following topics will be discussed:
- Experimental design (Setting up and planning experimental series, statistics)
- Scientific conduct (Handling items, best practices and green chemistry)
- Equipment and Methodology (Setting optimization, optimized handling)
- Lab Organization and Procurement (Lab culture, purchasing, ...)
- Experimental design (Setting up and planning experimental series, statistics)
Patrick Penndorf gives a 40 minute talk on the topic of improving science through sustainability, followed by an extensive Q&A session (20-30mins). We encourage participants to join face to face, but the webinar will also be streamed. Please choose your ticket accordingly.
After the seminar, the members of the VIB eco teams are invited to a two hour workshop with Patrick Penndorf. A series of – prepared – questions on the concrete application of sustainable practices (waste sorting, rising freezer temperature, consumables reduction) will be dealt with.
VIB researchers, group leaders, center directors. All VIB collaborators.
- This training is only open for VIB participants and is free.
- Note that upon no show without valid justification you will be blacklisted for the VIB training program for 1 year. Click here for more information.
- The session will be streamed as a webinar, active participation in de Q&A online is possible.

Patrick Penndorf
Patrick is a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics. His research is about unraveling the cross-regulation between immune and nervous system in health and disease. He focuses on flow-cytometric and microscopical methods to evaluate tissue niches after chronic pathologies and sequential infections.
Patrick is also partner at ReAdvance. ReAdvance communicates, markets and advances Sustainability - within the laboratory but also in all minds. ReAdvance believes that sustainability is not just about the environment but a new approach to make us more efficient, effective and fulfilled.
