Video & Pitching

Target Audience:
All VIB staff
Location:

 Brussels - SciMingo Office

Duration:

Workshop on 25 April  - Pitching your Research (full day)

Recordings on 24 May for the selected participants (1 hour)

General context

How can you pitch your research?

Learn how to pitch your research to a lay audience in a clear and compelling way and have it recorded in a professional 3-minute video!

Did you know that, along with you, nearly 10.000 junior researchers are conducting a doctoral or postdoctoral study in Flanders at the moment? While these researches find their way to colleagues in academia through scientific publications and conferences, only a small amount is brought to the attention of the general public.

SciMingo, organizer of the yearly Ph.D. Cup, wants to teach you how to get non-experts excited about your research ànd help you to convey insights into the doctoral research you are (or have been) working on for years to the general public! Not through an academic lecture, but told as a compelling and comprehensible story for non-peers. A daylong workshop on presentation techniques will help you rise up to the challenge: explain the core of your research in a clear and convincing 3-minute pitch.

And that’s not all: the participants will have their “pitch” recorded and published online. Video recordings will take place ca. four weeks after the workshop, allowing the selected researchers to develop and tweak their presentation.

Objectives
  • Learn how to pitch

This skill is also useful for lectures, research proposals, scientific articles,...

  • Gain camera experience

Get rid of your shyness and shine!

  • Tell people what you do

You may use your video to tell everybody about your research.

Approach

During the physical workshop "pitching", you learn how to define your key message, and how to structure and write your pitch in order to convey this message. We also teach you how to use your voice, your body, and the camera so that everyone listens.

After the workshop, you'll continue to work on the script for your video pitch at home. But don't worry, you don't have to do it alone! We provide two feedback rounds to guide you through the process and to get you ready for the recordings.

Your video pitch is recorded professionally. You'll only need to be available for 1 hour on recording day (5 June).

Finally, we also help you to spread your message. Your video will be published on Sciencefiguredout.be, our social media channels, and perhaps even by our media partner Eos.

Event intended for

Trainers

The Floor is Yours

Hans Van De Water was tired of listening to poor research presentations. As a regular organizer of events, he started looking for a magic formula to good presentations.

During one of these events he invited Toon Verlinden to deliver a talk on water purification. His presentation was clear, teasing and dynamic. Hans asked Toon to put their heads together.

They emerged with a joint purpose: support researchers at universities, university colleges and organizations in bringing clear and attractive research presentations.

Because life is too short for bad presentations…

Program

The workshop will cover these topics:
• Structure: how should I build up my pitch? What is the difference between a formal and informal pitch?
• Attention: how can I make my pitch interesting for my audience?
• Simple: how can I simplify a complex story for my audience to understand?
• Body language and voice: how can I best use these to make my message come across?
• Camera: how am I to act in front of a camera?
• Slides: should I use slides or objects to draw people’s attention?
