General context

During this training, different aspects of ‘responsible research’ will be discussed.
Bioethics is one of the core aspects of responsible research. It is a very prominent issue in the biomedical areas of life sciences research. For instance, in research involving primary human materials, in clinical trials or in the use of animals for scientific research. What are the main ethical issues here? How do we deal with them? What is the role of ethical review boards in this area and how do they function? What about animal research? How do you apply the three R’s (replacement, reduction and refinement) in animal research?
Also, the ‘broader societal impact of biotech and life sciences research’ will be dealt with. Contested topics, such as e.g. embryo research and the worldwide debate on the public availability of human sequence data, will be discussed.

Objectives

After completing this course on biomedical research ethics, the participants should have the awareness, the necessary background information, and enough practical insights to become a true responsible scientist.

Approach

Next to highly interactive theoretical lectures, different practical exercises will be built in.
